Martha Anne Brown

Martha Anne Verner Brown, age 91, died at home at Redstone Highlands in North Huntingdon Township on Sunday, November 28, 2010.

Born January 4, 1919 in McKeesport to the late Alfred R. and Ada Lottig Verner, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Westminster College and a Master of Letters from the University of Pittsburgh. Martha Anne retired from a career of teaching high school math and German in the McKeesport Area School District. Martha Anne married the late Thomas Pearson Brown (“Brownie”).

Martha Anne was an active member of the McKeesport Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and an elder. She was a Past President and member of both the McKeesport College Club and the McKeesport Woman’s Club. She belonged to the Queen Aliquippa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, A.A.R.P. – White Oak Chapter 2294, and the McKeesport Area Association of Retired School Personnel. She volunteered with McKeesport Meals On Wheels and supported various charities.

She was an avid bridge player. Martha Anne will be especially remembered for her quick wit, her concern for both her friends and former students and her grace and determination through many challenges.

Friends will be received Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM in the Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport, PA 15132. A service will take place Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at 11:00 AM in the McKeesport Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Darrell Knopp officiating. Burial will be in the McKeesport & Versailles Cemetery.
