Robert J. Wampler

Robert J. Wampler, 84, formerly of McKeesport passed away on March 27, 2013 in West Chester, PA. Born in McKeesport on February 19, 1929, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Sophia D. Wampler. He shared 59 years of marriage with his late wife, Gail Bestwick Wampler, who preceded him in death in 2010. He is survived by his sons, Robert J. III (Tammy) of West Chester, PA and Randall J. (Cheryl) of Marietta, GA, grandchildren Robert J. IV (Kate), Todd P. (Mary Cate), Ashley N. and Julie A., great-granddaughter Audrey M. Wampler, and his sister Nancy W. Guarascio of Marietta, GA.

Mr. Wampler was a 1946 graduate of McKeesport High School as well as a graduate of Penn State University and the University of Pittsburgh. He was a member of Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church, past Chairman of Boy Scout Troop 99, member of Elizabeth Township Planning Commission, past President and Board of Directors member for the McKeesport Heritage Center, Board of Directors of McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery, and member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He was a long time member of Youghiogheny Country Club, served on its Board of Governors, and was a skillful and avid golfer. He served as Lt. JG in the US Navy during the Korean War as gunnery officer aboard the USS Coates, DE 685.

He retired after 33 years with US Steel having held various management and executive positions in the Financial Department. He also served 9 years as Superintendent of McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery.

A memorial service in his honor will be held at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church at 11:00 AM on May 4, 2013. Interment will be private. Contributions in his memory may be made to either Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church (2200 Buena Vista Rd., McKeesport, PA 15135) or the McKeesport Heritage Center (1832 Arboretum Dr., McKeesport, PA 15132).
