Ruth S. Richards
Ruth Spangler Richards, 99, of White Oak, formerly of Elizabeth Township, died Monday, April 28, 2014 at Kane Regional Center, McKeesport. Born in Pine Grove, PA, February 23, 1915, she was the former assistant to the director of personnel for the Department of Employment and Unemployment Compensation in Harrisburg, a junior high school librarian in the Elizabeth Forward School District, and served for 23 years as the administrator of the Carnegie Library of McKeesport. A member of Wesley United Methodist Church, she served as its organist and choir director for 47 years, was the church librarian, and was a member of its Berrier Class and United Methodist Women. She was a member of the McKeesport Regional History and Heritage Center, and served on its board of directors. She was a member of the McKeesport College Club, the McKeesport Music Club, the McKeesport Symphony Auxiliary, the Queen Aliquippa Chapter of the D.A.R., and the White Oak Women’s Club. She served as a member of the board of directors of the Friends of the McKeesport Carnegie Library, and was a member of and pianist for the White Oak A.A.R.P. Daughter of the late Rev. Luther Stoy and Nell Barbara Price Spangler; wife of the late George Knight Richards; she is survived by her son, Dr. Miles S. Richards of White Oak and by cousins. A memorial service will be held Friday, May 9, 2014 at noon in Wesley United Methodist Church with Pastor Deb Kociban officiating and Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport, PA 15132 in charge of arrangements. Private burial will take place in McKeesport and Versailles Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Carnegie Library of McKeesport, the McKeesport Regional History and Heritage Center, the Elizabeth Township Historical Society, or the Queen Aliquippa Chapter of the D.A.R.
