Phyllis Bird Snyder Small

Phyllis Bird Snyder Small died Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at Manor Care of Monroeville. Born in McKeesport November 28, 1923, age 85. Of White Oak, she was co-owner of Phyllis’s Jeans and Apparel of Rostraver. A graduate of Glassport High School in 1941, she earned a Bachelor’s degree from Indiana State Teachers College and a Master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh. A teacher in Washington, DC and Glassport, she was also a local Sunday school teacher and Girl Scout leader. A member of Congregation Gemilas Chesed, past president of B’nai Brith Women, Gemilas Chesed Sisterhood, Hadassah, as well as the Jewish Women’s National Organization. She was a great cook, excellent baker, and loved to bake Hungarian pastries. She also enjoyed needle-point and bingo!

Daughter of the late Milton and Gussie Golda Janavitz Snyder of Glassport, she is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Isadore Small, son, Steven Laib Small of White Oak, daughter, Rachel Dena Small of White Oak, 2 grandchildren, Akiba and Sara Small of White Oak, nieces & nephews, and was preceded in death by sister, Beverly Barnes and brother, Dr. Merrill J. Snyder.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 3:00 PM in the Original Gemilas Chesed Cemetery, Center Street with Rabbi Nachum Brand officiating. Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport is in charge of arrangements. The family suggests contributions to the Gemilas Chesed Prayer Book Fund.
